June/July 2010 - Jarrett Mitchell: "Yoga and Cigarettes"
Opening Reception Check out the commercial for Jarrett's show! Yoga and Cigarettes is a group of work that addresses alternate routes in which human breath is materialized. Using breath as the key ingredient to art production, perception and all other human actions, this series of works provides objects for appreciation and situations for understanding ones own body as “The” site for artistic activity. In addition to drawings, photographs and videos, Jarrett Mitchell is presenting two new artist books at Booklyn. “Cigarettes and Yoga” chronicles the artists relationship with the two activities. “Nicotine Dreams” is a book of drawings and writings, documenting the heightened dreamstate of the nicotine patch. The exhibition will open on Saturday June 5th at Booklyn. YOGA JAM VII, a free public yoga event, will be held the next day, Sunday June 6th, at McCarren Park. Jarrett Mitchell is the founder of Yoga Jam. His past projects include: Dontbombthemoon.com, Experience Farm Horse Racing Partnership, Lets Be Active and The Calendar Club of Danger and Fun. Mitchell's work has been shown at Deitch Projects and Apex Art in New York, as well as New Langton Arts and the Museum of Folk and Craft Art, in San Francisco. Mitchell was included in the catalog for the New Museum's exhibition "Younger Than Jesus". And in 2006, he was awarded the EAST Prize by Jeremy Deller at EAST International, for his project "The Dawn of The Birth of the Battle of the Right to Life VS. The Law of Death". Mitchell received a Master of Fine Arts from The California College of Arts and Crafts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The University of Iowa. He lives and works in Iowa City.
