IntroductionReading a book educates. Making a book is an education. Through the development of skills such as verbal and visual storytelling, problem solving, original thinking, and hand-eye coordination, bookmaking promotes literacy, creativity, self-expression, and self-esteem. As a medium and a message, bookmaking encourages the development of the voice, the ability to articulate it, and the means to make it heard. Booklyn's Education program aims to provide the basic background, skills, and techniques for learners of all ages to express their ideas and manufacture their own media, while creating a space for the mutual exchange of information and experiences.
Booklyn offers affordable and accessible classes at our facility, and our Teaching Artists are also available for offsite curricular consulting, workshops, lectures, and partnerships. In addition to our programming, Booklyn internships are available in book arts, education, and not-for-profit arts administration. Booklyn has taught at every learning level and for a variety of organizations throughout New York City, including public schools (PS250, Eastside Community Middle School, Heritage High School), non-profits (East Harlem Tutorial Program, El Puente/The Point) colleges and universities (Pratt Institute, Cooper Union), and professional development conferences (Partnership for After School Education (PASE), Studio in a School). If you would like to discuss the possibilities of how Booklyn can work with your school or organization, please e-mail Jamie Munkatchy, Education Coordinator, at munkaj@yahoo.com.
