Red Charming & Impractical Labor, Emily Larned, Bridgeport, CT & New York, NY
Please visit Red Charming and Impractical Labor for an overview of Emily's work. Red Charming is Larned's production label; Impractical Labor in Service of the Speculative Arts is a new collaboration with Bridget Elmer, a former Booklyn president.
Red Charming was established in 1999, six years after Emily published her first zine. The name is an imaginary bad translation meaning "an object or an aesthetic which combines the cerebral with the visually pleasing." Over the years projects have included zines, artist books, letterpress printed ephemera, clothing, limited edition multiples, typefaces, and animations, but emphasis remains on research, writing, handmade processes, and small-scale workshop production. In 2008 Emily was elected President of the Booklyn Board; she joined Booklyn in 2000, and has served on its board since 2001. Her work is collected and exhibited internationally. She received her MFA from Yale School of Art in 2008 and is currently adjunct faculty at SUNY Purchase College and the University of Connecticut at Storrs.
