Introduction by Jane Lecroy: "Poetry is a way of seeing the world that invents meaning and pays honor to everyday experience. Using poetry in the classroom is a fun and enriching way to engage students with language. It offers an opportunity for students to learn from one another's observations and interpretations of the world, uniting the class as an intellectual community. Concepts such as structure, metaphor, allegory, and word play are internalized and become part of the students' tool box of self-expression. When I work with students, we read and write poetry together... we challenge ourselves to explore our imaginations, dreams, and memories with words.
